MCB Family Day 2011

event :: event :: MCB Family Day 2011
date :: 23rd July 2011
venue :: Blaise Castle, Bristol, UK
time :: 10am - 5pm
theme :: national costume + bright colors.

[1] The Malaysian Community of Bristol (MCB) held our annual family day event the weekend right before the Ramadhan started. A lot of effort were placed for planning the whole event, thanks to the hardworking coordinators. The chosen venue is Blaise Catle, a beautiful park located a mere 20 minutes away from Bristol. Farah and Imran kindly gave us a ride to the venue. According to hubbykun, you could also take bus #41 to get here.

[2] The event started with a photo shoot that was sent for the Salam Aidilfitri for Utusan Malaysia newspaper, courtesy to Riezal who has a friend working here. For this purpose, most of us first came dressed up in their Malaysian traditional clothing before changing into more sport/outdoor appropriate attire. Next was a speech from our MCB President ('Penghulu') i.e. the honorable Abg Zahar.

[3] As usual with any Malaysian event, you're guaranteed serious food galore! as usual the menu was based on potluck-basis. I can't recall all the menus, among them are: nasi impit, kuah kacang, bbq chicken/lamb/sausages, all kinds of noodles, rojak buah (apple donated by kak za's backyard).

[4] Before we started up devouring all the wonderful dishes, there was a birthday celebration for all the July and August babies. A number of sinful birthday cakes were prepared especially for this.

[5] Notice that the colorful face-painting on the kids. I asked and was told their faces were painted by some of the elder kids. So talented! There were a number of little tigers, butterflies and flowers that day.

[6] Pakcik canteen Dr Sam also joined in the event. He was actually here because he came for short visit for his convocation ceremony. He prepared a special fruit punch and superb bandung juice for us to enjoy. Since it was a sunny day, Uncle Sam canteen was very popular that day ;)

[7] While enjoying the wonderful food, the games coordinators started preparing the games site. Kak Wan was the Head Judge. there were actually around 12 games prepared, but due to time limitation we only had time for 6 games that day.

[8] Game 1: 'This is my treat!' for kids age 6 and below collect sweets on the designated area. some kids were too young to know that they were supposed to collect the sweets, so needed some interference from the parent. except that some parents tend to get a little carried away, one such example was Riezal :P he collected so much sweets that not only were sweets inside the plastic bag, but in all of his kid pants pockets hahaha

[9] Game 2: 'mummy says slowly does it' mimah+wandy glued the ball to yaya's soon. in the video, you can see Yaya running carefree and making a super-fast u-turn :P

Game 3: 'The way forward' or also known as the 3-legged race, for kids 7 years and above. i remembered that one of rifqi's son didn't want to play and was crying because he was scared. But somehow his mom managed to sweet talked him into playing and he ended up having a great time ;)

[10] Game 4: 'crabs do it this way' where a child and an adult need to carry the ball from one end to the other without using hands. it was supposedly a father-child partnership, but since a number of fathers were busy eating and gossiping away, so instant foster parent system had to be invented :P Hubbykun partnered up with Kak Za's/Abg Lah's son, Farhan. We found Farhan crying before the game because he lost in the 3-legged race game. Kak Za told us that he is very competitive and hated losing. So hubbykun promised him victory for this game. The game was divided into 2 groups: the girls team and the boys team. The girls won though, so hubbykun kinda broke his promise. Luckily everybody won some prizes :)

Game 5: 'catch me if you can'. the game where couples were required to throw a raw egg without breaking it. the distance between the couple kept getting further as the game proceed. couple who drop/break the egg are ousted. this was a game from last year's family day too, but that time i didnt get to play cause hubbykun was taking a prayer break. this year i made sure not to missed it. me & hubbykun even managed to get third place. I think its safe to claim though that i am a better thrower and catcher ;)

[11] Game 6: 'I want to be like gok', where 3 kids chose were supposed to dress up an adult with any materials they can find around them. the title is according to a Brit TV show, so I was told (have never watched this show though, since we dont own a telly :P). somehow i got picked up by Min/Nurul/Anis to be their model. they did a great job and we won the 3rd place! yay!

[12] the rest of the models and their talented stylists. Aida's team won the 1st place and Yus's team won the 2nd place.

[13] Next were a string of golf competition according to categories. First was the golf for men. Abg Zahar was one of the winners, not surprising since they always practised playing golf together with the other golf enthisiasts. Ayiq wanted to join in the picture though. Kak Keen must be pleased to see that Ayiq was smiling really sincerely in this picture

[14] Next was golf for women. i sucked at gold btw. it wasn't even a near miss! i remembered that the golfer's wives such as Kak Wan, Kak Sarina were really outstanding.

[15] i was surprised that a number of kids were really good at golfing too. At first I thought that kids wouldn't be interested in golf, but to my amazement they were all queueing up to have their turns!

[16] Finally it was time for the prize-giving ceremony. Farah was the coordinator for all gift-related. she was very organised, even printed/labelled all the prizes according to games. Since I was keeping tabs on all the games results, so I was sharing a bit of her limelight.. hehe
